In business, there is never a perfect time to take a break. The deadlines don’t stop. Projects keep moving. The inbox fills faster than it empties. For leaders especially, the stakes often feel too high to simply step away.
But last week, I did just that. On an impulse, I got on my KTM1290 and rode up the West Coast. I needed space, not another meeting, not another spreadsheet, but time to literally stop and smell the flowers.
What I rediscovered on that ride is that stepping back is not indulgence, it’s essential leadership practice.
Clarity comes from distance. When you pull back, you can see patterns, risks, and opportunities that are invisible when you’re buried in the day-to-day grind. Space creates perspective, and perspective fuels better decisions.
Mental health is not a luxury; it’s leadership hygiene. Burnout at the top trickles down, but so does resilience. When leaders protect their own wellbeing, they set the tone for the entire organisation. Teams follow the example you set.
Strategy requires stillness. Some of the best ideas don’t happen at a desk. They surface when you give yourself the time and space to think deeply. Noise blocks vision; quiet unlocks creativity.
Energy fuels execution. Stepping away allows you to recharge. A leader running on empty makes cautious decisions and misses opportunities. A leader with energy inspires momentum in others.
Perspective sharpens priorities. Distance helps separate the urgent from the truly important. It reminds you what actually moves the business forward and what can wait.
And most importantly, it reconnects you with purpose. When you’re constantly “doing,” it’s easy to lose sight of the “why.” Taking time out allows you to align daily actions with long-term vision, ensuring you’re not just busy but building the right future.
That ride was more than just a reset. It reminded me that leadership isn’t only about working in the business; it’s about carving out moments to work on the business. It’s in those pauses that we can reframe our perspective, align with our bigger goals, and come back energised to lead with clarity.
If you’re feeling the weight of constant delivery, consider this your permission slip. Take the break, even if the timing feels “impossible.” Step away, if only for a few hours.
🌱 Sometimes the best way to move forward is to stop, breathe, and then return with renewed energy and focus.
