The Future Belongs to Skills, Not Titles

2

Last week’s edition – “Why Talent Is the New Growth Capital” – sparked great conversation about how people drive performance. Many of you highlighted upskilling as a way to stay competitive, especially for smaller businesses.

This week let’s go one step deeper.

Titles Don’t Build Growth – Skills Do

For years, titles were the shortcut to status and capability. But as work evolves, titles are losing their meaning. The World Economic Forum’s Future of Jobs 2025 report shows that 44% of workers’ skills will be disrupted within five years, while demand for skills like analytical thinking, adaptability, and leadership keeps rising.

PwC also found that 84% of CHROs are now investing in workforce strategies that map skills rather than roles – a sign that global business is shifting to what people can do, not what they’re called.

In Africa, this shift is even more urgent. Skills shortages remain one of the biggest barriers to growth. The WEF warns that South Africa could face a critical skills gap by 2030 unless businesses start upskilling and rethinking how they hire and develop talent.

What a Skills-First Mindset Looks Like

Leaders embracing this shift are:

  • Mapping capabilities, not just roles. Knowing what skills exist internally and where the gaps are.
  • Investing in continuous learning. Treating upskilling as a growth strategy, not an HR initiative.
  • Hiring for potential. Looking for people who can adapt and learn, not just fill a title.

For individuals, it’s about building a portfolio of skills, learning across disciplines and showing the agility to grow beyond your job description.

Looking Ahead

In next week’s edition, I’ll unpack how to build a “skills marketplace” inside your organisation – so your people can move, grow, and contribute where they add the most value.

Because in today’s world, skills are the true currency of growth and the organisations that understand this will lead the next chapter of Africa’s success story.
