Progress begins when we stop hiring for comfort.
At the HR Indaba last week, one of the panelists shared a line that’s stayed with me: “Life shrinks or expands in proportion to one’s courage.” – Anaïs Nin
It’s such a simple truth and yet, it holds profound weight in how we build teams, lead people, and make hiring decisions.
Because courage isn’t only a personal quality. It’s an organisational one.
Comfort vs. Courage
It takes courage to challenge a familiar hiring process. To say, “We’re not just filling a vacancy; we’re building capability.”
Too often, companies play it safe, hiring for familiarity instead of potential, for credentials instead of conviction. But safety and sameness rarely drive transformation.
Growth begins the moment we decide to stretch, to choose capability over comfort, difference over duplication.
Where Courage Shows Up
Courage looks like:
- A leader who hires someone better than themselves.
- A recruiter who challenges a narrow brief.
- A company that invests in building capability before urgency forces it.
And sometimes, courage is as quiet as saying no to a hire, a shortcut, or a decision that doesn’t align with the long-term vision.
Courage as a Strategy
Research shows that organisations that build adaptability and courageous decision-making into their culture are 1.5× more likely to outperform their peers in revenue growth (Harvard Business Review, 2023).
But beyond the data, courageous hiring builds belief – belief in the mission, the process, and the people driving it.
Because when courage becomes part of your hiring DNA, you stop reacting to the market and start shaping it.
In Closing
Courage doesn’t remove risk, it refines it. It shifts the question from “What if it doesn’t work?” to “What if it does?”
Every transformation begins with someone willing to do things differently. That’s true for leadership, culture, and the teams we build.
Until next week, keep moving with purpose. –
