2025 Talent Wrap-Up: What This Year Confirmed About 2026

7

As someone working closely with South African audit, tax and advisory professionals, both locally and internationally, 2025 stood out as a year that challenged a few long‑held assumptions about mobility, progression and hiring momentum.

As we close out 2025, it’s worth reflecting on what the year actually revealed about the South African professional services talent market, and how that shapes expectations for 2026.

Rather than dramatic shifts, 2025 was a year of recalibration.

What 2025 showed us

International hiring slowed, increasing local competition After several years of strong international pull, we saw a noticeable slowdown in offshore hiring activity. As a result, more South African professionals remained in the local market, making competition for roles, and for talent more concentrated.

Counteroffers are happening more often, but they are not the norm Counteroffers featured more frequently than in previous years, but they are far from guaranteed. In most cases, they emerged late in the process and often triggered hesitation rather than decisive action from candidates.

Importantly, many candidates were clear on what they wanted at the start of a process, but faced uncertainty once a counteroffer was presented.

Decision-making became more cautious Rather than moving quickly, professionals took more time to weigh stability, role content and long-term trajectory. Fewer candidates moved impulsively; most wanted to feel confident they were making the right move, not just a possible one.

We also saw a notable number of South African professionals return from international roles.

In many cases, the driver wasn’t lifestyle or compensation, it was a lack of clear career progression offshore. Limited promotion pathways, slower advancement and role stagnation prompted many to reassess long-term prospects and re-enter the local market with a more defined sense of what they want from their next move.

What this confirms about 2026

These patterns reinforce several key themes heading into 2026:

• The local market will remain competitive, even without strong international pull

• Mobility will be thoughtful and deliberate, not reactive

• Employers who create clarity and confidence will stand out

Speed still matters, but so does consistency and communication throughout the hiring process.

Lessons for employers going into 2026

The firms that will hire successfully next year are already:

✔ Engaging talent earlier, before roles become urgent

✔ Clearly articulating role scope, progression and expectations

✔ Building conviction throughout the process, not just at offer stage

The market hasn’t stopped – it has matured.

Firms that adapt their hiring approach accordingly will be best positioned for 2026.

Here’s to a considered close to 2025 and a well-prepared start to the year ahead.
